Abstract As most recent electric devices are actuated by the control signals from the communication infrastructure, it is of to maintain the availability of the communication network in power systems. Even a short time disability in a communication system can cause a fatal blow to overall power system operation. In this paper, we present a state evaluation technique based on the security objects in the standard, IEC 62351 part 7, which provides operators with the simplified states of communication networks. At first, we defined the explicit eight states for a network connection to easily describe the current situation. Secondly, we made a state transition table that describes the conditions to switch into another states. Finally, we built a finite state machine (FSM) that combines with the states and the state transition table described previously. With the FSM given to each network, we can easily and exactly monitor the current state of the network and predict the next probable state. Additionally, we configured a virtual network including end terminals, network nodes, and paths with the graphical notations, and simulated the example scenario with the proposed methods.
